There is no doubt about R Ashwin’s greatness and the off-spinner has been leaving Rohit Sharma in awe with his ability to improve with every passing game, the India captain said after their dominant win over Sri Lanka in the 1st Test of a 2-match series in Mohali on Sunday.

R Ashwin on Sunday overtook legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev to become India’s 2nd highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. Ashwin went past Kapil’s tally of 434 wickets and now is next only to Anil Kumble, who is at the top of the Indian list with 619 wickets.

Returning to the side after an injury lay-off during the limited-overs series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka, Ashwin hit a fifty and picked up 6 wickets in the first Test that India won by an innings and 222 runs.

Ashwin is at the 9th spot on the all-time wicket-takers list, having picked up 436 wickets in 84 matches at a staggering average of 24.26. Among active Test cricketers, Ashwin is the third-highest wicket-taker after England fast bowling duo Stuart Broad (537) and James Anderson (640).

“He is an all-time great in my eyes. He is playing for so many years and performed for the country. So many match-winning performances, so for me, he is an all-time great. People might have a different point of view but from where I see, he is an all-time great for me,” Rohit Sharma said.

Rohit lauded Ashwin for the landmark Test in which the off-spinner worked in tandem with Ravindra Jadeja to trouble the Sri Lanka batters. India picked up 16 wickets on Day 3 as Sri Lanka were bundled out for 174 and 178 in response to India’s first-innings total of 574/8 declared.

“When you grow up wanting to play Test cricket, you don’t dream about these things and so to surpass that is a big achievement on his behalf. You know, I have been watching Ashwin for a long time now and every time I watch him, he seems to get better and better.

“Ashwin is one such player who always has confidence is in his ability in what he wants to achieve and for the team as well,” Rohit said.

Ashwin’s spin twin Jadeja also had a memorable Test match as he became the first Indian in 60 years to hit a 150-plus score (175 not out in the first innings) and pick up a 5-wicket haul in a Test. Jadeja ended up with 9 wickets in the Mohali Test.
