Skipper Rohit Sharma set a new record on Friday as he became the most successful T20I captain at home venues after India hammered Sri Lanka in the second T20I to take a 2-0 unassailable lead in the three-match series in Dharamshala.
Rohit has now led India to 16 wins in 17 matches at home venues in the T20I, placing him above England captain Eoin Morgan and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson. Among Indian captains, Rohit has registered three more victories than Virat Kohli and five more than MS Dhoni, at home.
India came up with a stunning display of chasing as they gunned down a 184-run target in just 17.1 overs. They rode on Shreyas Iyer’s 2nd successive fifty and a blistering 19-ball 47 not out from Ravindra Jadeja and a 26-ball 39 from Sanju Samson to pull off the chase after they leaked aplenty with the ball.
With the win, India also clinched a 2-0 unbeatable series lead in the 3-match series against Sri Lanka, extending their winning run in home T20Is.
Overall, Rohit has 23 wins in 25 matches as T20I captain in his career. This win not only guarantees an 11th successive win for India under his leadership but also a third consecutive series victory since becoming a full-time captain of the format in November 2021.
The Indian team has been on a winning spree since their shocking group exit at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021. Since the loss to New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2021, the Rohit Sharma-led side hasn’t lost any match in the shortest format of the game.
India have clinched three successive T20I series victories following the T20 WC, both at home, under their new leader Rohit Sharma. Since taking over as the T20I captain, Rohit has led India to a 3-0 victory against New Zealand, a 3-0 victory against West Indies.
Notably, Rohit has been on a record-breaking spree as he had surpassed New Zealand opener Martin Guptill and Virat Kohli to become the leading run-scorer in Twenty20 Internationals during the first T20I against Sri Lanka on Thursday. Also, under his leadership, Team India had also claimed the No.1 spot in T20I rankings after the 3-0 series sweep over West Indies.
